Prevalence and factors associated with depressive symptoms in medical students in the municipality of Imperatriz, Maranhão

Objective: This study aimed to evaluate the prevalence of depressive symptoms, as well as factors associated with the development of depression in medical students in the municipality of Imperatriz-MA. Methods: A quantitative, observational, cross-sectional study was carried out, in which 240 medical students were randomly selected from the first to the eighth period who were 18 years old or older. For data collection, a sociodemographic questionnaire and the Beck Depression Inventory (BDI) were used. Results: The studied group varied in age between 18 and 44 years, being predominantly male and coming from other cities. In the evaluation of depressive manifestation using the BDI, it was observed that 47.9% of the students had a BDI score greater than 14, indicating some degree of depression, whether mild, moderate or severe. Final considerations: The study confirmed the prevalence of depressive symptoms present in other studies. Therefore, strategies must be developed within the institution in order to prevent and treat this pathology, enabling students to cope with situations of stress and depression.
