CONSUMPTION OF FOOD SUPPLEMENTS BY UNIVERSITY STUDENTS

Resumo: Objective: The research aimed to evaluate the consumption of food supplements by university students in the city of Maringá-PR. Methodology: First, the project was sent to the Research Ethics Committee of Unicesumar for approval. The study was carried out with 32 students from a higher education institution, located in the city of Maringá-PR. Participants should be practitioners of physical exercises, aged over 18 years and voluntary participation in the study. Data collection was carried out with the application of a questionnaire, containing socio-demographic information of the individuals, information regarding the physical activity practiced, in addition to the consumption of food supplements, type, amount ingested, frequency and time of consumption, purpose, form of acquisition, who indicated the same, if they obtained results and side effects. After the application of the questionnaire, the data were tabulated and described in graphs, using percentages. Results: The results showed that the supplements most used by academics were vitamin and mineral complexes, creatine and Whey Protein, following the prescription of a health professional. Conclusion: It was concluded that most university students participating in the research make use of food supplements, with multivitamins being the most used, and most of them were using them from the prescription of a health professional, avoiding indiscriminate use.

Métodos: Primeiramente, o projeto foi encaminhado ao Comitê de Ética em Pesquisa da Unicesumar para aprovação. O estudo foi realizado com 32 estudantes de uma instituição de ensino superior, localizada no município de Maringá-PR. Os participantes deveriam ser praticantes de exercícios físicos, com idade superior à 18 anos e a participação voluntária no estudo. Metodologia: A coleta dos dados foi realizada com a aplicação de um questionário, contendo informações sócio-demográficas dos indivíduos, informações quanto à atividade física praticada, além do consumo de suplementos alimentares, tipo, quantidade ingerida, frequência e tempo de consumo, finalidade, forma de aquisição, quem indicou o mesmo, se obteve resultado e efeitos colaterais. Após a aplicação do questionário, os dados foram tabulados e descritos em gráficos, através de percentuais. Resultados: Os resultados mostraram que os suplementos mais utilizados pelos acadêmicos foram complexos vitamínicos e minerais, creatina e Whey Protein, seguindo prescrição de um profissional de saúde.
