Resumo: Retrospective cross-sectional study of duplicate prescriptions, from Basic Health Units (UBS) and Family Health Strategy units (FHS) at Itaguaí, between June-July / 2017, using prescription indicators proposed by the World Health Organization. Legal legislation requirements were also assessed as well as the existence of copies of the Municipal List of Essential Medications (REMUME) in health facilities. 7,502 prescriptions were analyzed (average of 2.78 medications/prescription). The majority (74.38%) of the drugs was generic and 85.56% belonged to REMUME. In 22.38% of the prescriptions at least one antibiotic was prescribed. Overall, the analysis of prescription indicators showed better results for the FHS. The dissemination of REMUME proved to be insufficient. This study can assist actions of municipal pharmaceutical assistance, especially within the scope of Primary Health Care (PHC), directing managerial and educational efforts with a focus on promoting the rational use of medicines.
