Resumo: The objective of this trial was to investigate the waste management in Veterinary clinics of Pelotas –Brazil. The methodology of qualitative approach was carried out in 15 randomly chosen clinics in different regions of the city. The information was obtained using a structured technique interview in which a survey containing questions about aspects of Veterinary waste management was conducted. The results herein obtained showed that the waste management does not meet the criteria and procedures established by the law, an unknown situation for the Sanitary Surveillance Service of Pelotas –Brazil. The municipal Sanitary Surveillance Service should monitor more effectively the Veterinary clinics. Besides, a more articulate and simultaneous work of disclosure and awareness directed to Veterinarians is needed. Such work should cover legal, environmental, market and sanitary implications concerning the management of sanitary waste.

Foi utilizada a metodologia de abordagem qualitativa em 15 estabelecimentos, escolhidos aleatoriamente em diferentes regiões da cidade de Pelotas. A coleta das informações foi realizada utilizando-se a técnica de entrevista estruturada, através de um questionário contendo perguntas sobre aspectos do gerenciamento dos resíduos de saúde. Os resultados demonstram que o gerenciamento de resíduos realizado pelas clínicas veterinárias não atendem aos critérios e procedimentos estabelecidos pela legislação vigente, sendo a situação desconhecida pelo Serviço de Vigilância Sanitária do município de Pelotas/RS. A Vigilância Sanitária Municipal deve fiscalizar mais efetivamente as clínicas veterinárias do município de Pelotas/RS.
