Coming of age, memory and affection: the power of photography in "Before the world ends"

Resumo: The book Before the World Ends, by Marcelo Carneiro da Cunha, brings a narrative about the role of photography in the coming of age process of some characters. The photographs in the book serve no mere informational or decorative purpose, but are central, once they are printed among the text and compose the narrative, making it an experience that mingles different arts and languages. This essay analyzes aspects of photography raised by Roland Barthes that are present in the book, besides analyzing the book’s cinematographic transposition, expanding the Interarts phenomenon between literature, photography and cinema.
