Resumo: Germinal (1885), the most famous of all Émile Zola’s novels, pictures the struggle between “Capital and Labour” in its representations of everyday life in the mining community working in the north of France during the second half of the nineteenth century. This article aims at analyzing how these representations are maimed during their travels from the book, as it was written by the father of Naturalism, to the stage. Despite their efforts to keep the spirit of the novel, Zola and Busnach, his favorite dramatizer, were finally defeated by the government’s censors. By travelling from its paper pages to the Paris theatres, the plot had lost all its revolutionary strength.
