Resumo: This paper revisits the sociofunctionalist work of Pimpão (2012) about the variable use of the present subjunctive, seeking for two objectives: to present the methodological decisions for the constitution of a diachronic sample composed by letters to the editor published in newspapers from Santa Catarina and to identify, in the diachrony, evidences of a possible loss of mood distinctions. Therefore, results were reexamined arising from new statistical rounds, including, for comparability purposes, the synchronic sample. A general interpretation indicates that modal values are still acting in the variation of the phenomenon under analysis, although the present subjunctive rates are higher in diachronic data.

O primeiro objetivo é apresentar as decisões metodológicas para a constituição de uma amostra diacrônica composta por cartas ao redator publicadas em jornais das cidades de Florianópolis e de Lages (SC) a partir do final do século XIX até o final do século XX.
