The relevance of the notion of construal for textual linguistics and discourse studies: theory and analysis

Resumo: We aim, in this paper, both to discuss the notion of construal and its tipology of operations and to show its applicability and pertinence for linguistic data analysis in terms of the processes of meaning production and, especially, interpretation in the field of discourse and textual studies. In order to do so, we will, first, expose some of the theoretical grounds of the embodied approaches to cognition and, afterwards, present the main assumptions of Cognitive Linguistics relevant to textuality. Only then we will debate, based on analytical exemplification, the various construal operations, such as schematization, metaphorization, categorization, focalization, viewing arrangement, granularity and proximization.
