Participation of Brazilian women in politics has increased in the public sphere and their attributions go beyond their domestic and personal experiences, activities are developed in the public service dealing with, among other sectors, health and education. Such activities, however, are mostly mediated by the media, which frequently serves as a link between society and political actions and activities. Departing from the idea that the media has the social function to inform the population about the facts and happenings resulting from social, political and cultural life, the mais objective of this article is to analyze how Dilma Rousseff – Brazilian Chief of Staff and pre-candidate for the Presidency at the time in which this article was written – is represented by the media. We take into account the theoretical underpinnings of discourse studies on politics (CHARAUDEAU, 2006a), and the methodological aparatus of Systemic-Functional Linguistics, in order to examine the representation of Dilma Rousseff based on the realization of verbal processes (HALLIDAY, 1994, 2004; BARBARA; MACÊDO, 2010).
