Resumo: The study was developed to evaluate the effect of the increment of concentrate in beef cattle diet, slaughtered with 14-16 months of age, on animal performance, economic evaluation, ingestive behavior and quantitative and qualitative characteristics of carcass and meat. Sixteen, not castrated Charolais-Nellore crossbred, steers were used and fed with 22, 40, 59 or 79% of concentrate in the diet (LC). The animals were randomly distributed and each treatment contained four. The average initial age and weight were of 9.32 months and 192.44 kg, respectively. The animals were feedlot fineshed until they reached 400 kg of body weight. The supplied diet was isoproteic and the used forage was the corn silage. The finals age and weight, neutral fiber detergent intake, feed conversion, month profit, feeding and rumination times, number of rumination bolus, neutral detergent fiber rumination efficiency and physiologic maturity decreased linearly with increase of concentrate in the diet. The dry matter intake in percentage of live weight and metabolic size presented a quadratic behavior, increasing until 67% of concentrate in diet. The digestible energy intake, average daily weight gain, idle time, dry matter feeding and rumination efficiencies, sawcut percentage, meat color and texture presented a linear increase with the increment of the concentrate level in diet. Beef cattle finishing of not castrated steers between 14-16 months of age and feedlot with final weight of 190 kg is economically feasible using a concentrate increment between 26 and 61% in diet. The major concentrate supply in diet increases the feeding and rumination efficiencies and improves meat visual aspect.

The major concentrate supply in diet increases the feeding and rumination efficiencies and improves meat visual aspect.O estudo foi desenvolvido para avaliar o efeito do incremento de concentrado na dieta de bovinos de corte abatidos entre 14-16 meses de idade, através do desempenho, avaliação econômica, comportamento ingestivo e características quantitativas e qualitativas da carcaça e carne. Foram utilizados dezesseis bovinos mestiços Charolês-Nelore não castrados, alimentados em confinamento com 22, 40, 59 ou 79% de concentrado na dieta, distribuídos inteiramente ao acaso, com quatro repetições por tratamento. A idade e o peso médio inicial dos animais foram de 9,32 meses e 192,44 kg, respectivamente. Os animais foram abatidos quando atingiram aproximadamente 400 kg de peso vivo. A dieta fornecida aos animais foi isoproteica e o volumoso utilizado foi a silagem de milho. A idade final, o peso final, o consumo de fibra em detergente neutro, a conversão alimentar, a lucratividade mensal, o tempo destinado ao consumo de alimento e a ruminação, o número de mastigadas por bolo regurgitado, a eficiência de ruminação da fibra em detergente neutro e a maturidade fisiológica diminuíram com o aumento de concentrado na dieta. O consumo de matéria seca em percentagem do peso vivo e tamanho metabólico apresentaram comportamento quadrático, os quais aumentaram até 67% de concentrado na dieta. O consumo de energia digestível, o ganho de peso médio diário, o tempo destinado ao ócio, a eficiência na alimentação e ruminação da matéria seca, a percentagem de traseiro na carcaça, a coloração e textura da carne apresentaram aumentos lineares com o incremento do nível de concentrado na dieta. A terminação de bovinos inteiros entre 14-16 meses de idade e confinados com peso vivo médio de 192 kg é viável economicamente entre 26 e 61% de concentrado na dieta.
