“And now... Caterpillar burned!” Theatre of puppets of awareness as a tool in environmental education

Poisoning caused by contact with caterpillars of the species Lonomia obliqua predominate in southern Brazil. Among the reported cases of accidents with this caterpillar in Paraná, 20 % are with children between the age of 10-19 years. The aim of this study was to raise awareness through puppet shows, students who participated in the Ecological Cantonment Curitiba, about the importance of knowing this caterpillar. The study had the participation of 102 students from 5th grade of elementary school three schools in Curitiba. In schools of origin a pretest questionnaire was administered. Students to participate in Cantonment, watched the puppet show and then responded to the same questionnaire, called the post-test. The results of pre and post-test questionnaires were tabulated and analyzed using the chi-square test. After the analysis verified the effectiveness of puppetry in awareness, recognition and prevention measures in relation to caterpillar in question process.
