Resumo: The objective of this paper was to estimate the parameters and genetic values for the traits height, diameter and survival of erva-mate progenies, in an initial development phase, for the establishment of a progeny test in the indian area Kaiowá and Guarani. Seeds from 30 parent trees were collected in Caarapó, MS. The half-sib progenies were established at the COMFLORA Reflorestadora nursery in Ponta Porã, MS, in a randomized complete block design, with thirty progenies, five replications and ten plants per plot. Eight months after planting, height, diameter and survival were evaluated. The values of individual heritability (0.48; 0.55 e 0.79) and progeny mean heritability (0.74; 0.87 e 0.90) for height, diameter and survival, respectively, were expressive, suggesting great possibility of genetic progress in the future evaluation. Genetic gain predictions of 46.31% for height and of 38.61% for diameter were obtained with selection of the best ten individuals. The coefficients of individual genetic variation (CVgi%) for height  (25.24) and diameter (18.48) were high, suggesting  desired genetic expression for genetic improvement purposes. The genetic gain for the evaluated age stimulates the use of this germoplasm in future evaluations at advanced ages.

The genetic gain for the evaluated age stimulates the use of this germoplasm in future evaluations at advanced ages.O presente trabalho objetivou estimar parâmetros e valores genéticos para caracteres altura, diâmetro e sobrevivência de progênies de erva-mate em fase inicial de desenvolvimento, com vistas ao estabelecimento de teste de progênie em área indígena Kaiowá e Guarani, visando à seleção de materiais genéticos adaptados ao local. As sementes foram coletadas de trinta matrizes nativas de polinização aberta no município de Caarapó, MS. As progênies de meio-irmãos foram estabelecidas no viveiro da COMFLORA Reflorestadora, em Ponta Porã, MS, sob delineamento de blocos ao acaso, com trinta tratamentos (progênies), cinco repetições e dez plantas por parcela em linhas simples. Aos 8 meses de idade, foram avaliados os caracteres: altura total das mudas, diâmetro do coleto e sobrevivência. Os valores obtidos de herdabilidades individual (0,48; 0,55 e 0,79) e para média de progênies (0,74; 0,87 e 0,90) para os caracteres altura, diâmetro e sobrevivência, respectivamente, foram expressivos, sugerindo grandes chances de progresso genético na seqüência das avaliações. Ganhos genéticos preditos de 46,26% foram obtidos para o caracter altura e 38,61% para o caracter diâmetro, com a seleção dos dez melhores indivíduos. Os coeficientes de variação genética individual (CVgi%) para os caracteres altura (25,24) e diâmetro (18,48) são considerados valores elevados, o que denota a ocorrência de uma expressão genética desejável para o programa de melhoramento genético.
