Evaluation of the teaching and learning process of the game of chess in the early years of elementary school

Resumo: The game of chess is gradually gaining space in Brazilian schools as a pedagogical resource in the development of cognitive and intellectual skills. In this sense, the objective of this study was to evaluate the teaching and learning of the rules of the game of chess in a municipal school in Guanambi/BA. We opted for field research within a qualitative approach with a sample made up of two classes from the 2nd and 3rd year of elementary school. Data collection was through observation and field diary, and interpreted through content analysis. The results showed the need for teachers to rethink their way of teaching chess rules by paying attention to the number of students per class. A semester with two weekly classes was not enough to master the rules. Finally, it detected that disciplinary, school and family factors prevented at least a quarter of chess classes from being held.

Neste sentido, o objetivo deste estudo foi avaliar o ensino e aprendizagem das regras do jogo de xadrez numa escola municipal de Guanambi/BA. Optou-se, partir de uma abordagem qualitativa, pela pesquisa de campo, com uma amostra formada por duas turmas de 2º e 3º ano do ensino fundamental. A coleta de dados envolveu observação e diário de campo, interpretados pela análise de conteúdo. Os resultados mostraram a necessidade do professor repensar sua forma de ensino das regras do xadrez, atentar para o número de alunos por turma e pelo tempo de duração das atividades.
