Resumo: The essay aims to investigates the conceptions of assessment among teachers of Colégio Pedro II located in Rio de Janeiro. The research focuses on a central element in pedagogical practices. The analysis was based on the Theory of Social Representations. The research results reveal a representational set of assessment whose character is summative and classificatory. The diagnostic ideal of assessment are highlighted by a minority group of teachers. The central nucleus of teachers 'social representations of assessment approaches the limits present in the traditional school culture and institutional structure, which privilege the weight of the tests in the students' learning and progression processes.Key-words: learning assessment; teaching practice; social representation.

A pesquisa teve como foco um elemento central nas práticas pedagógicas, tendo sido a análise feita com base na teoria das representações sociais. Nesse sentido, os resultados da investigação revelam um conjunto representacional de avaliação cujo caráter é somativo, classificatório e centrado em provas.
