Resumo: Productions in the area of special education in Brazil have been significantly expanded in the last three decades due to advances in educational policies and recognition of the right to education of people with disabilities, contrasting with the advances of neoliberal reforms and privatist policies that threaten the Brazilian education. In this way, the present study is characterized as being of a qualitative nature through a documental and bibliographical research of the productions carried out in the state of Piauí on the themes of special and inclusive education and that refer to the Historical Cultural Theory, both in relation to Pedagogy History Critical about Psychology Historical Cultural with a focus on studies of Vigotski's Defectology as a theoretical, epistemological and methodological matrix. The results indicate that despite a considerable number of works in the studied area making use of Vigotskian references, none of them make reference to defectology texts that explore aspects of the development and schooling of people with disabilities in a more specific way.
