Who and where are the higher education blind students in Brazil?

Resumo: Understanding the profile and the institutional and academic aspects that involve blind students in higher education is truly relevant for reflecting on the effectiveness of affirmative policies and to promote actions concerning specialized care to this public. The article is a quantitative, exploratory study based on secondary data from the 2018 Census of Higher Education (CenSup) microdata. It describes the profile and insertion of blind students in public and private Brazilian Higher Education Institutions (HEIs) according to sociodemographic and institutional characteristics. We analyzed the data on descriptive statistics. In 2018, 2,537 blind students had enrolled, 37.8% in public HEIs and 62.2% in private HEIs. Two questions guide this study: What kind of institution and field of knowledge are blind students have been enrolled in? What is their sociodemographic profile? The results show the prevalence of enrollment of blind students in the private sector distributed in 462 Higher Education Institutions (HEIs), mainly in the university segment (60.9%) and in the face-to-face education (75.8%). The most attended undergraduate is in the fields of Education, Business, Administration, and Law. Most of these students are male (55%), self-declared white (45.4%), and in the age group of up to 30 years old (62.9%).

El artículo es un estudio cuantitativo y exploratorio basado en datos secundarios de los microdatos del Censo de Educación Superior (CenSup) de 2018. Describe el perfil y la inserción de los estudiantes ciegos en las Instituciones de Educación Superior (IES) brasileñas públicas y privadas según las características sociodemográficas e institucionales. Los datos fueron analizados utilizando estadística descriptiva. En 2018, se habían matriculado 2.537 estudiantes ciegos, el 37,8% en IES públicas y el 62,2% en IES privadas. En este escenario, dos preguntas orientan este estudio: ¿en qué tipo de institución y área de conocimiento se da la inserción de los estudiantes? ¿Y cuál es el perfil sociodemográfico? Los resultados muestran una prevalencia de matrícula de estudiantes ciegos en la red privada, distribuidos en 462 Instituciones de Educación Superior (IES), principalmente em el segmento “universidades” (60,9%) y em la modalidad de enseñanza presencial (75,8%). Los cursos de educación superior más concurridos son en las áreas de Educación, Negocios, Administración y Gestión. La mayoría de los estudiantes son hombres (55%), autodeclarados blancos (45,4%) y de hasta 30 años (62,9%).A compreensão do perfil e dos aspectos institucionais e acadêmicos que envolvem os estudantes cegos no ensino superior se mostra de grande relevância para a reflexão sobre a efetividade das políticas afirmativas já existentes e como forma de subsidiar ações mais assertivas em relação ao atendimento especializado a esse público. O artigo é de cunho quantitativo e exploratório baseado em dados secundários dos microdados do Censo do Ensino Superior de 2018 (CenSup). Ele descreve o perfil e a inserção de estudantes cegos em Instituições de Ensino Superior (IES) públicas e privadas brasileiras, de acordo com características sociodemográficas e institucionais.
