Resumo: | This article aims to analyze the concepts of "normal" and "abnormal" in scientific and educational publications published in the 1930s. To this end articles from the Brazilian Archives of Mental Hygiene and the New School Magazine that addressed the theme in question were chosen, all of them in digital format. So, 11 publications were analyzed, corresponding to the years of 1930 and 1931. Documentary research and content analysis were used as a methodology, considering a kind of resource that helps in the interpretation of latent or manifest meaning in written records. The analyses led us to realize that there was no consensus regarding the adoption of the terms "normal" and "abnormal" and that these meanings served to classify and create stigmas in children who did not fit the standardized descriptions according to the medical-educational thinking, whether or not they had some intellectual deficit by the application of intelligence tests. These findings were in line with the eugenics ideal, which had a direct influence on the pedagogical practices of the period studied. |
