A prática cirúrgica na visão de médicos cirurgiões: um estudo clínico-qualitativo

The professional practice of medicine implies to frequently face complex situations of pain, sickness, suffering and death. Nowadays, in face of the rapid development of technology, the demands and challenges are increasingly enlarged. Besides, the great responsibility taken by the doctor concerning their patients’ health results in a behavior in which they are too hard on themselves, as well as in complex demands on the part of relatives and patients. All of these factors become even more intense in the case of surgeons, making them more susceptible to excessive loads, physical and emotional distresses. This is due to the fact that surgery, which has the doctor as the major player of this specialty, is a process where the patient’s life is at risk, and thus demands high excellency standards and constant upgrading so that mistakes that can lead to irretrievable consequences are avoided. Before these ascertainments, this research aims to understand the meanings attributed by surgeons to the surgical practice. To do so, a descriptive, exploratory survey was used, coupled with the clinical-qualitative methodology. The participants were 10 surgeons, from both sexes and different surgical specialties, bound to a teaching hospital located in an inland city in Rio Grande do Sul. The data were collected through two tools: Sociodemographic Questionnaire and Semi-Structured Interviews. Their examination was made through the analysis of their content, with the aid of Nvivo, a software of qualitative research. Every ethical principle was respected according to the Resolutions 466/12 and 510/2016 from the National Health Council, which cover ethical matters involved in researches with human beings.
