Currently, visibility around the increase in life expectancy encourages and provides opportunities for the reconstruction of trajectories and their meanings, especially among the older adults, who live longer as retirees.Retirement, in addition to the scope and exercise of rights, has been understood as a condition of life, sometimes stereotyped.This context particularly affects men. The aim of this study was to characterize the meanings of retirement and the socioeconomic profile of retired older adults. Case study, exploratory and descriptive with application of mixed form. Use of descriptive statistics.The sample consisted of 200 older adults associated with SINDNAPI.Male older adults, between 60 and 69 years of age, low income and education,lack of institutional preparation for retirement and social involvement and who do not work due to choice,illness and age prejudice were more prevalent.Retirement has positive meanings, despite dissatisfaction with income.The vulnerable male socioeconomic prevalence did not negatively influence the meanings of retirement,including because it represents security and tranquility.The heterogeneity of old age in the face of the current Brazilian debate on the Social Security System requires new studies on the perception of retirement among the older adults,aiming at assertive actions of attention to this social segment, especially of a symbolic nature.
