IMPERATRIZ, THE PEOPLE AND THE FAME: the imaginary violence in the newspaper O Progresso (MA)

The article discusses the violence in the newspaper O Progresso (OP) from the theories of the imaginary (MAFFESOLI, 2001; 2003a; SILVA, 2012). Founded in 1970, the vehicle takes center stage in the production of the speech that underpins the modernization of the city of Imperatriz. OP enacts violence when reporting and opining about crimes, while at the same time trying to deny that Imperatriz is considered violent. The weekly magazine reiterates the professional mythology when it is placed like neutral instance, mediator of the facts and the public. The corpus is composed of 79 occurrences of the years 1970 and 1971. We understand imaginary violence as a symbolic construct resulting from the journalistic action on reality.
