Resumo: | Family succession, or lack thereof, has been a recurrent theme in the debate on rural development. Many farmers' children migrate to the city to study and work and do not return to continue their families' activities. Thus, the succession process is a complex and dynamic topic that needs to be discussed under different contexts. This study aims to analyze the family relationships on the rural property and the permanence of the young person in the dairy activity. As a methodology, an exploratory, bibliographical and descriptive research was carried out, with structured qualitative and quantitative data collection. Eighty-two young rural producers, aged between fifteen and thirty years, single, living in rural production units with their families, took part in the research, covering 34 municipalities in Rio Grande do Sul. Overall, the study observed that the families are minors and with fewer children, even so more than half of them have at least two successors, among these the majority intend to remain in the family business and as factors that can contribute to the permanence, income and coexistence stood out family. |

Overall, the study observed that the families are minors and with fewer children, even so more than half of them have at least two successors, among these the majority intend to remain in the family business and as factors that can contribute to the permanence, income and coexistence stood out family.
