The Social Representations of Motherhood and the Myth of Maternal Love

Resumo: This article aims to discuss the conceptions of motherhood from the literature review on the socio-historical construction of the myth of maternal love. The results of the study reveal that representations of motherhood involve concepts such as unconditional love and maternal instinct that were socially constructed and legitimized by the philosophical, medical and political discourse of each era. It is evident that, despite advances in women's sexual and reproductive rights and the construction of new female roles, motherhood is still idealized and is often perceived as the only possible way of achieving femininity, generating intense psychological suffering, especially for those who, either by choice or impediment, deviate from the social representation of being a woman.

Los resultados del estudio revelan que las representaciones de la maternidad involucran conceptos como el amor incondicional y el instinto maternal que fueron socialmente construidos y legitimados por el discurso filosófico, médico y político de cada época. Es evidente que, a pesar de los avances en los derechos sexuales y reproductivos de las mujeres y la construcción de nuevos roles femeninos, la maternidad sigue siendo idealizada y a menudo se percibe como la única forma posible de alcanzar la feminidad, generando un intenso sufrimiento psicológico, especialmente para quienes , ya sea por elección o impedimento, se desvía de la representación social de ser mujer.Este artigo tem como objetivo discutir as concepções da maternidade a partir da revisão da literatura sobre a construção sócio histórica do mito do amor materno. Os resultados do estudo revelam que as representações da maternidade envolvem concepções como amor incondicional e instinto materno que foram construídas socialmente e legitimadas pelo discurso filosófico, médico e político de cada época.
