From productive capitalism to financial capitalism: the construction of coherence on neopentecostal testimonials of prosperity

Resumo: The object of this investigation are the testimonials – public narratives of life history – of people aligned to Prosperity Theology. A set of narratives performed in evangelical TV programs from 6 Neo-Pentecostal churches were qualitatively and interpretatively analyzed according to a discursive approach informed by Narrative Analysis. The results describe formal patterns of such testimonials based on the labovian model and highlight that such narratives frequently present a recurring sequence of actions: an initial state of financial hardship leads the narrator to an investment which, in turn, is converted into material return. The sequence and the cause-effect relations constructed in such narratives allow for the interpretation that on the base of such constructions lies a system of beliefs constituted by simplified versions of the principles of contemporary financial capitalism.

Os resultados descrevem padrões formais desses testemunhos baseando-se no modelo laboviano, e destaca que frequentemente tais narrativas apresentam uma sequência recorrente de ações: um estado inicial de dificuldades financeiras leva o narrador a um investimento que se converte em retorno material.
