Use of the definite article before a proper name in Internet postings

Resumo: The present paper analyzes the variation in the use of the definite article before people's proper names in posts published on the social network Twitter. Supported by the theoretical and methodological assumptions of Variationist Sociolinguistics (Labov, 2008), this paper aims to describe and analyze the variable phenomenon "article in front of a proper name" in written language data in order to examine the behavior of the variable in the written modality and verify how close or far this usage is from what has been observed for Brazilian Portuguese speech data. The data collected was treated and controlled according to the relevant linguistic variables and analyzed according to the results presented by the GoldVarb X program. The results showed significant use of the article before people's proper names - 76.2% -, which shows that, in the textual genre considered, the uses observed in speech were also observed in writing.

Amparado pelos pressupostos teórico-metodológicos da Sociolinguística Variacionista (Labov, 2008), objetiva-se descrever e analisar o fenômeno variável “artigo diante de nome próprio” em dados de língua escrita, a fim de examinar o comportamento da variável na modalidade escrita e verificar o quanto esse uso se aproxima ou se afasta do que já se observou para dados de fala do português brasileiro. Os dados coletados foram tratados e controlados segundo às variáveis linguísticas pertinentes e analisadas de acordo com os resultados apresentados pelo programa GoldVarb X.
