Textile terminology in "O Jornal das Senhoras" (1852-1855): textile terms in the women's press of the 19th century

With this investigation, we aim to reflect on the textile lexicon present in the women's press of the 19th century, specifically in "O Jornal das Senhoras" (The Ladies' Newspaper). Through this research, we seek to introduce a portion of the lexicon related to fabrics that appeared in this journalistic genre and within the temporal space of the 19th century. To achieve this, we selected issues of "O Jornal das Senhoras," the first newspaper written by women in Brazil, analyzed the fashion column, and specifically inventoried the terms related to fabrics. For theoretical grounding, we chose authors who focus on lexicon, such as Biderman (2001), Seabra (2015), Orsi (2021), about the fabrics, we referred to Chataignier (2006) and Pezzolo (2017). The inventoried terms were analyzed based on their comparison with the lexicographic work by Houaiss and Villar (2009) and the textile glossary presented in Pezzolo (2017).
