Social aspects of language in the ideas of William Dwight Whitney (1827-1894): historiographic notes

Resumo: In this paper we have sought to rescue social aspects of language in the thought of William Dwight Whitney (1827-1894) from a historiographic perspective (cf. KOERNER, 1996; 2014; SWIGGERS, 2013; 2019). The analysis is centered on the book The life and growth of language (WHITNEY, 1875), in which the author presents a draft of linguistic science and gathers its main ideas. First, author and work are contextualized in relation to the opinion climate of the nineteenth century and its importance in Linguistics history. In sequence, social aspects that cross linguistic ideas of the author in the work are examined, considering what characterizes language life, processes of linguistic changes, and the participations of individual and society in the life of language.

KOERNER, 1996; 2014; SWIGGERS, 2013; 2019). As análises centram-se no livro The life and growth of language (WHITNEY, 1875), em que o autor apresenta um esboço da ciência linguística e reúne suas principais ideias. Primeiro, contextualiza-se autor e obra em relação ao clima de opinião do século 19 e sua importância na história da Linguística.
