Sociolinguistics situation of the Gavião Kỳikatêjê

This paper aims to describe the sociolinguistic situation of the Gavião Kỳikatêjê Indians who live in the Mãe Maria Reservation, located in Brazil, in the southeast region of the state of Pará. They are speakers of the Kỳikatêjê language that belongs to the Jê-family and to the Macro-Jê Stock. Using questionnaires, interviews and observations in locus, it was observed that the mother tongue of Kỳikatêjê speakers has lost ground to the Portuguese language, in all social areas within the village. The results show the historical aspects of interethnic contact and intergroup as one of the predominant factors in the linguistic and cultural weakening of these people in relation to the current intense contact of the surrounding society and the pressures of the majority language – the Portuguese language among the Indians, which have been active in the current sociolinguistic configuration of Gavião Kỳikatêjê.
