Elements for an approach to the schematic and emergent dimensions of discourse

This article aims to situate, in a theoretical framework, these notions: discourse genres, context, types of discourse and discursive sequences. The paper adopts a socio-interactionist perspective of language studies and seeks contributions from the Modular Approach to Discourse Analysis. We start from the hypothesis that, throughout an interaction, two orders of restrictions regulate the way in which the interactants elaborate their discursive productions. The first has a schematic nature and concerns the expectations of socio-historical order that inform how we should act through language. The second order of constraints is emergent and corresponds to the contextual parameters that influence the linguistic actions performed. We take as the empirical basis of our exposition the narrative type of the reporting genre and how this type occurs in a specific narrative sequence. Studying this type, we show that, in the course of an interaction, the schematic and emergent dimensions of discourse are constantly and dynamically confronted by the interlocutors.
