F0 variations and intonational phrase configurations: analysis of contrastive structures

Resumo: Through methods of laboratory phonology, this article describes F0 variations in sentences which share identical segmental strings, but present differences related to the prosodic configurations, especially in the domain of intonational phrase. In this description, F0 variations are interpreted to identify tonal events which characterize the intonation contour of contrastive sentences. During the analysis, this work presents methodological decisions adopted in the experimental procedure that guides the research. The results showed that the tonal differences in the configurations of intonational phrase in comparison are defined according to: (i) the number of prosodic words that form the intonational phrases; (ii) the position of the prosodic words within the different intonational phrases compared and (iii) the number of syllables of the prosodic words. Based on these results, we show that the tonal events organization is a factor of primary importance for contrasting structural differences in the intonational phrase domain in Brazilian Portuguese.

Nessa descrição, as variações de F0 são interpretadas de modo a identificar eventos tonais que caracterizam o contorno entoacional de sentenças em contraste. No decorrer da análise, são discutidas decisões metodológicas adotadas no procedimento experimental que norteiam a pesquisa. Os resultados encontrados mostraram que as diferenças tonais nas configurações da frase entoacional em comparação são definidas, privilegiadamente, em função (i) do número de palavras prosódicas que compõem as frases entoacionais; (ii) da posição que as palavras prosódicas ocupam nos diferentes fraseamentos desse constituinte e (iii) do número de sílabas das palavras prosódicas.
