Resumo: The objective of this research was to analyze the use of tú and usted forms in oral Spanish from Valencia, Spain, using a functional and cognitive linguistic approach. The study considered the functional principle of markedness proposed by Givón (1995, 2001) and the cognitive analytical tool developed by Langacker (1987, 1991, 2007, 2008) to gain a more comprehensive understanding of the nuances involved in the use of these forms. We conducted a qualitative analysis of data obtained from 12 semi-structured interviews from the Proyecto para el Estudio Sociolingüístico del Español de Valencia (PRESEVAL) corpus. We coded and quantified the analyzed occurrences to determine their frequency of use. To increase precision and minimize errors, we used Atlas.ti software. After analyzing the data, we obtained a total of 597 records of tú and usted and their respective paradigms. The use of the tú form as both subject and object was predominant. Pronouns in their subject function were more prominent than their respective forms in their object function. In terms of prominence, the tú form ranked first on a scale from most to least prominent, followed by usted, te, a ti, le, and a usted, in that order. Thus, the second person singular subject forms construct the referent in a clearer and more direct manner than the object forms.

Thus, the second person singular subject forms construct the referent in a clearer and more direct manner than the object forms.
