Can a pluricentric language be unified? : About the New Orthographic Agreement of the Portuguese language

Resumo: This article aims to answer a question concerning Portuguese as a pluricentric language: the possibility of having an orthographic unification in this scenario. To answer the question that arises, we seek to outline an overview of language policies (CALVET, 2007; BAGNO, 2017; DINIZ, 2020), the pluricentric condition of our language (CLYNE, 1992; WILSON, 2021, SILVA, 2018 and BAGNO, 2017), and the trajectory of orthography in Portuguese (HENRIQUES, 2021; 2015; GEIGER, 2009; SILVA, 2009; WINTER, 2008), which culminates – until now – with the New Orthographic Agreement of 1990. our investigation presents us with three possible answers to the question, each of which has immediate implications for the lives of more than two hundred million Portuguese speakers in the world.

Para responder à questão que se coloca, buscamos traçar um panorama acerca das políticas linguísticas (CALVET, 2007; BAGNO, 2017; DINIZ, 2020), da condição pluricêntrica de nossa língua (CLYNE, 1992; WILSON, 2021, SILVA, 2018 e BAGNO, 2017), e da trajetória da ortografia em língua portuguesa (HENRIQUES, 2021; 2015; GEIGER, 2009; SILVA, 2009; WINTER, 2008), que culmina – até o momento – com o Novo Acordo Ortográfico de 1990.
