Resumo: The complexity of the Amazon biome combined with some dilemmas of school education and challenges to participatory territorial management are themes intertwined in this study. The main objective was to understand what residents of the Extractive Reserve of Lake Cuniã (Brazil) say regarding their education. The research was based on the ethnographic method and was developed with residents of the Reserve. The data  reveal that traditional educational practices are based on daily work in close connection with nature. The school is seen as source of socially legitimated knowledge, and manifested as apart of traditional ways of life. It is conceived as a path to survival amid the urban-centric coercion of the economic system. Necessarydialogue between environmental and educational management is discussed among the data, thus that  ecological conservation can be harmonized with cultural valorization.
