Resumo: In the course of its 90 years of publication, Casa-grande & senzala has gone through several and distinct publishing trajectories, both in Brazil and abroad. Along with the innovations and qualities inherent in Gilberto Freyre's text, the action of editors and other mediators was decisive for the book to find success in the intellectual circles in which it appeared, particularly between the 1930s and 1960s. This dimension, generally not well considered by studies on it, is the subject of this article, which, based on the impressions expressed by Freyre himself in his correspondence, discusses how encounters, mismatches, tensions and mishaps marked the circulation and transits of its Brazilian and foreign editions in the period in which it was consecrated as a work of “universal” character.
