“Era só pizza que avuava junto com as brachola”: the São Paulo samba and the African-Brazilians’ obliteration from the memory of the cosmopolitan city

Resumo: The narrative that points to the peculiarity of São Paulo’s regional samba model relative to Rio de Janeiro’s samba is committ ed to legitimizing such genre in the city of São Paulo by forging a particular history for it. Understanding the reasons that lead a certain group of samba musicians to emphatically defend their narrative would require unraveling the São Paulo identity intricacies and its self-image based on valuing cultural elements associated with avant-garde. Aiming to reaffirm its cosmopolitan vocation and unwillingness to recognize itself as a mixed-race city, São Paulo had litt le space for a musical genre repeatedly associated with cultural blending and traditional Brazilian culture.   keywords: São Paulo samba; memory; African-Brazilian culture.
