Resumo: Cyro dos Anjos, a writer from Montes Claros, wrote an important memorialistic accountentitled A menina do sobrado. The first part of this book, called Explorações no tempo: memórias, recalls in great detail aspects of daily life in the city of Montes Claros between 1910 and 1923.The purpose of this article is to reveal, from the quoted text, aspects of the local political culture in the period in question. Above all, it is intended to identify how the city was represented in the author's memory. Despite the coronelista policy, the local elites considered Montes Claros a progressive city.
