Epic poetry and tragic experience: Sepulveda’s shipwreck

Resumo: Would the tragic experience be incompatible with the heroic glory to the point of constituting an obstacle to the epic chant? Would the topic about the fragility of the human condition prevent the delight, would it contravene the protocols of the genre and/or would be the unfolding of a pessimistic historical context? To what extent would the manifestation of heroism depend on the dramas of the finitude? With this article, we intend to answer these questions by taking as object the Naufrágio de Sepúlveda (1594), a poem attributed to Jerônimo Corte-Real.

Uma matéria que destacasse a fragilidade da condição humana impediria o deleite, contrariaria os protocolos do gênero e/ou seria desdobramento de um contexto histórico pessimista? Em que medida a manifestação do heroísmo dependeria dos dramas da finitude?
