Nightingales or farmers? The School of Music and Declamation, an experience of official artistic education in the province of Buenos Aires (Argentina, 1874-1882)

The Escuela de Música y Declamación, founded in 1874 by the government of the province of Buenos Aires, was the first official experience of institutionalization of the teaching of music in Argentina. Scarcely explored by historiography, this establishment was the subject of numerous government debates at a time when the critical situation of the public finances and the country's institutional instability called into question the areas and scopes of state intervention.
