Resumo: In this articleI arguethat, beyond the original intentions of the states that finance them and the officials who lead them, music archives not only preserve music, but in doing so, potentially favor its transformation. I work the hypothesis through an analysis of the metamorphoses undergone by the indigenous song “Carnaval de Tambobamba,” a song recorded a Capella by the well-known Peruvian writer José María Arguedas in the 1960s for the traditional music archive he formed at the Casa de la Cultura del Perú. I show that this recording unleashed a series of recontextualizations, giving rise to a social biography of the indigenous song that returns it to what Diana Taylor calls the repertoire
