Sound, music, and attitude in chilean rock and roll in the 60’s

Resumo: This article addresses the concept of rock as it was defined by the practice of the Chilean rockers during the mid sixties. That practice was transformed into a discourse by the first rock critical studies published in Chile in the nineties. Finally, from the current musicology, I review the way rock and non-rock has been defined in Chile, both from practice and from the discourse. The question is about the conditions that allow the existence of rock, as was conceived in the sixties. The hypothesis is that these conditions must be sought in three basic aspects: sound, music and attitude. Keywords: rock; youth; Chilean popular music.

Esa práctica fue transformada en discurso por los primeros estudios críticos sobre rock publicados en Chile en los años noventa. Finalmente, desde la musicología actual, reviso la forma en que ha sido delimitado el rock y el no-rock en Chile, tanto desde la práctica como desde el discurso. La pregunta entonces es sobre las condiciones que permiten la existencia del rock, tal como fue concebido en los años sesenta. La hipótesis es que esas condiciones deben buscarse en tres aspectos básicos: el sonido, la música y la actitud.
