Artisanal fishing in the municipality of Guarapari, state of Espírito Santo, Brazil: An approach to the perception of fishermen working in small-scale fishing

In the municipality of Guarapari, in the state of Espírito Santo (ES), artisanal fishing is practiced along the coastline. In this way, the objective of this study is to describe the fishing activity practiced in the municipality of Guarapari, based on the perception of artisanal fishermen. Ethnographic interviews were conducted with the application of semi-structured questionnaires, individually, through a dialogue with fishermen working in the region (n = 80). Information was also obtained through participant and direct observations, noted in a field diary. The data were organized into categories, analyzed by the method of Triangulation and descriptive statistics. All the interviewees are men aged between 27 and 77 years, have low schooling and the fishing time varies between 3 and 60 years. According to the fishermen, gear bottom trawl, gillnet, handlines and traps are the most used. The fishing activity is developed along the coast of this municipality, mainly in the area near the Three Islands, Rasas Islands and Island Escalvada. In the interviewees' perception, fishing is one of the main sectors of the local economy.
