AIR POLLUTION AND COVID-19: ANALYSIS OF MORTALITY IN THE NORTHERN REGION OF BRAZIL

Resumo: | Air pollution is a problem present in all socio-spatial contexts, affecting millions of people annually around the world. Intense urbanization and socio-environmental risks are linked to mortality from cardiorespiratory diseases aggravated by atypical contexts, such as the COVID-19 pandemic. Using mortality data from the Ministry of Health and atmospheric pollutants, we sought to identify the relationship between exposure to air pollution and deaths from COVID-19 in the Northern region of Brazil. The negative binomial mixed statistical model, with zero inflation (ZINB), was used for deaths from Covid-19 at the municipal level as a stage, and for the long-term average, atmospheric emissions (PM2,5, NO2, and O3). Included in the model are control variables, such as harmful, demographic, and health equipment variables. The results showed a positive association between deaths from COVID-19 and particulate matter (PM2,5) with an increase of around 1.15 µg/m³, as well as for the bipollutant models (O3 and NO2) and (PM2,5 and O3). The general analysis confirms the increase in atmospheric emissions without worsening and consequent mortality from COVID-19 for all municipalities in the Northern Region. The context also linked to low education, low income, low supply of beds and health professionals, goes back to the existing spatial selectivity, mainly for vulnerable populations. |

A intensa urbanização e os riscos socioambientais estão atrelados a mortalidade por doenças cardiorrespiratórias agravadas por contextos atípicos, como o da pandemia da Covid-19. Por meio de dados de mortalidade do Ministério da Saúde e poluentes atmosféricos buscou-se identificar a relação entre a exposição à poluição do ar e os óbitos por Covid -19 na região Norte do Brasil. Utilizamos um modelo estatístico misto binomial negativo com inflação de zero (ZINB) para os óbitos por Covid-19 em nível de município como desfecho, e para a média de longo prazo, poluentes atmosféricos (PM2,5, NO2 e O3). Foram incluídos variáveis-controles - climáticas, demográficas e oferta de equipamentos e profissionais de saúde. Os resultados evidenciam associação positiva entre as mortes por Covid-19 e material particulado (PM2,5) com incremento de cerca de 1,15 µg/m³ no modelo principal, assim como, para os modelos bipoluentes (O3 e NO2) e (PM2,5 e O3). A análise geral confirma o incremento de poluentes atmosféricos no agravamento e consequente mortalidade por Covid-19 para todos os municípios da Região Norte.
