SPATIAL ANALYSIS OF SYPHILIS IN PREGNANT WOMEN IN THE STATE OF PARANÁ: EMPHASIS ON THE BORDER REGION

Syphilis is a sexually transmitted infection, considered an important problem in public health. Although it can be prevented and cured, the number of cases is increasing. The purpose of this study was to map areas with high rates of gestational syphilis incidence in the state of Paraná and to compare these rates with the border region. This is an ecological study that used spatial analysis techniques in the state of Paraná from 2010 to 2018. For data collection, the National System of Diseases and Notifications (SINAN) was used from DATASUS. The results point out that the annual rate for gestational syphilis in Paraná was 11.0 cases/1,000 Live Births (LB), and in the border region, the rate of gestational syphilis was higher (9.23 cases/1,000 LB, p<0.001) when compared to the other municipalities (6.59 cases/1,000 LB, p<0.001). The high rates are concentrated in the western, southwestern, metropolitan, and coastal regions. In the northern area of the state there are several cities with high rates, but no concentration.  The study points to an increase in the incidence of gestational syphilis in Paraná between 2013 and 2017 and identifies regions with high rates. These results contribute to the development of actions to control gestational syphilis in the state.
