Resumo: Renal failure (RF) is characterized by the loss of functional capacity of the kidneys, which can lead to complications and premature death. Although the Brazilian Ministry of Health provides data on deaths to RF at a municipal level, the spatial distribution pattern of this disease is unknown, which is essential for public health policies. This work characterizes the space-time distribution of RF mortality in the municipalities of São Paulo State from 2008 to 2020. The number of deaths to RF in each municipality of the state was collected from the information technology department of the Unified Health System for the period studied. RF mortality was estimated by dividing the number of deaths in the municipality by its number of inhabitants, multiplied by 10,000. The spatial statistical techniques were used to detect spatial clustering, noting that the distribution pattern of RF mortality in the state is not random. The number of deaths to RF showed a growing trend in the São Paulo municipalities from 2008 to 2020. The trend did not show association to gender, however, the number of deaths to RF is higher for men than for women. The group above 59 years of age has the highest risk of death to RF, with the most critical regions located in the western part of the state, especially in municipality of São José do Rio Preto. These findings highlight the importance of a spatial and temporal analysis of the distribution of RF mortality, supporting the planning and allocation of health resources to mitigate the impacts of this disease in Brazilian municipalities.
