The article aims to reflect on the process of alphabetization and literacy in the first year of Elementary school, after Law 11.274/2006, which changed the time of primary education from eight to nine years. This is a research carried out through observations and interviews and analyzed from the perspective of alphabetization and literacy within the policies for nine-year primary education. In terms of results, it can be inferred that there is a need for conditions different from the current ones, in order the children of six years have at school effective alphabetization conditions with literacy in the first year of the literacy cycle. After all, they are still kids when they are at school. There is still a predominance of the use of synthetic and analytical methods according to the understanding of the social function of writing.
