Resumo: | Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease is a major public health challenge and is considered preventable and treatable, but is currently the fourth leading cause of death worldwide, with projections of becoming the third cause by 2020. Objective: To identify cases of COPD through secondary data research at the Uberlândia Clinical Hospital of the Federal University of Uberlândia (HC / UFU) and to seek association regarding the sociodemographic and epidemiological aspects of patients. Methods: We searched 731 medical records of patients living in the city of Uberlândia, who were hospitalized for COPD or who had COPD, between May 2013 and May 2018. Results: Most patients lived in the urban area (99.2%), male (61.9%) and with a mean age of 71.4 ± 11.7 years. The patients were smokers (36.3%), former smokers (56.4%) and non-smokers (7.3%). The CIDS found were J44.9 (86.8%), J44.1 (11.7%) and J44.8 (1.36%). Patients with CID J44.1 were more likely to be hospitalized (OR = 4.70), higher number of hospitalizations (OR = 2.47), symptoms at the time of hospitalization (OR = 7.95) and were more associated with presence of heart disease (OR = 3.63). Death was more associated with CID J44.1 (OR = 3.86) and dyspnea (OR = 2.19). Conclusions: COPD is a major public health problem, especially for the older population with a previous history or smoking habit. Patients with CID J44.1 were associated with more severe disease, which required greater therapeutic assistance and higher chances of death. |

O óbito esteve mais associado ao CID J44.1 (OR=3,86) e à dispneia (OR=2,19).
