De faculdade isolada à universidade: 45 anos da federal FMTM em Uberaba/MG (1960 a 2005)

Resumo: | Why did the Faculdade de Medicina do Triângulo Mineiro (FMTM) remain an isolated institution of higher education for more than four decades after its federalization? With this issue as a research problem, this thesis is presented, being linked to the line of research "History and Historiography of Education", of the Graduate Program in Education, at the Federal University of Uberlândia (UFU). Starting from the year in which the institution was federalized, 1960, efforts were made to understand the process that culminated in its transformation into a university. According to the temporal delimitation defined in each chapter, we sought to know and analyze political, economic, social and cultural aspects that contributed to the FMTM remaining as an isolated college until 2005, when, in the context of higher education expansion policies, it was created the Federal University of Triângulo Mineiro (UFTM). From the contributions of authors such as Cunha (1983, 2005), Germano (2005), Hobsbawm (2013), Le Goff (2013), Prost (2008), among others, the theoretical-methodological foundation was developed that supported the analysis criticism of the sources obtained through documentary research and Oral History, an approach that allowed recording and considering the memories and experiences of subjects who experienced relevant facts involving the research object. In this sense, queries were made to the physical and digital archives of the UFTM, the Public Archive of Uberaba and the Public Archive of Minas Gerais, as well as interviews with two former directors of the institution, three professors (one retired), a former student of FMTM and a former member of the Uberaba Central Student Directory (DCE) in Uberaba. The analysis of the sources shows that there are several reasons why the FMTM did not become a university until 2005, passing through internal issues – since there were institutional decisions that collaborated for this –; by public higher education policies that, in certain contexts, did not favor the growth of public institutions that provided this level of education; by interests of leaders and traditional families of the city of Uberaba; among others that are listed throughout the work. Finally, it is expected to contribute to the deepening of historical knowledge about the UFTM, as well as to the advancement of the field of History and Historiography of Education. |

Tendo essa questão como problema de pesquisa, é que a tese se apresenta, estando vinculada à linha de pesquisa "História e Historiografia da Educação", do Programa de Pós-Graduação em Educação, da Universidade Federal de Uberlândia (UFU). Partindo do ano em que a instituição foi federalizada, 1960, empreenderam-se esforços no sentido de compreender o processo que culminou na sua transformação em universidade. Conforme a delimitação temporal definida em cada capítulo buscou-se conhecer e analisar aspectos políticos, econômicos, sociais e culturais que contribuíram para que a FMTM se mantivesse como faculdade isolada até 2005, quando, no contexto das políticas de expansão do ensino superior, foi criada a Universidade Federal do Triângulo Mineiro (UFTM). A partir das contribuições de autores como Cunha (1983, 2005), Germano (2005), Hobsbawm (2013), Le Goff (2013), Prost (2008), dentre outros, desenvolveu-se a fundamentação teórico-metodológica que embasou a análise crítica das fontes obtidas através de pesquisa documental e de História Oral, abordagem que permitiu registrar e considerar as memórias e experiências de sujeitos que vivenciaram fatos relevantes envolvendo o objeto de pesquisa. Nesse sentido, foram realizadas consultas aos arquivos físicos e digitais da UFTM, do Arquivo Público de Uberaba e do Arquivo Público Mineiro, bem como foram feitas entrevistas com dois ex-dirigentes da instituição, três professores (um aposentado), um ex-aluno da FMTM e um ex-integrante do Diretório Central de Estudantes de Uberaba (DCE) de Uberaba. A análise das fontes evidencia que são variados os motivos pelos quais a FMTM não se transformou em universidade até 2005, perpassando por questões internas – já que houve decisões institucionais que colaboraram para isso –; por políticas públicas de ensino superior que, em determinados contextos, não favoreceram o crescimento das instituições públicas que ministravam esse nível de ensino; por interesses de dirigentes e famílias tradicionais da cidade de Uberaba; dentre outras que são elencadas ao longo do trabalho.
