Vestido de Noiva can definitely be considered as part of the history of Brazilian theatre. Moreover it is almost unanimously believed to be the inaugural milestone of its Modern era. Comprehending the legitimation of such an important element requires a deep analysis of the process that demonstrated the innovative modern characteristics that this play introduced. The reasons that lead to a such important definition of the play have to be found both in its development and in all the debates that surrounded it. Searching for modernity elements in it and investigating the author believes is not enough to a complete comprehension of the process. What needs to be done is enter the theatre critics’ universe and learn about the formation process of their knowledge; taking into account their evolutions, assumptions and peculiarities. Special attention is to be given also to the social backgrounds where these critics derive from and the target they are willing to meet. This monograph’s aim was to create reflections through which make possible a full comprehension of the legitimization process of this play as a Brazilian modern-theatre milestone, not forgetting to consider also the voice of the conflicting opinions against it. At last, essential to the investigation has been reflecting about how crucial the theatre critic’s thought and the aesthetic and politic intervention of its subjects have been to the legitimation of this milestone. The place from which the questions that lead to the investigation derived.
