This research aimed to understand the changes in the concepts of "national security" and "threat" in the U.S. in the period after World War II until today. For this, the research was focused on four governments: John F. Kennedy (1961-1963), George H. W. Bush (1989-1993), George W. Bush (2001-2009) and Donald Trump (2017-2021). We analized 132 speech scripts of these US presidents, using the content analysis method to verify which terms are connected to national security issues in the analyzed presidential speeches. With this, we identified the most important sub-themes for each of the periods and expanded the understanding of the position of these actors in relation to national security issues. The LTA helped identify the personality traits of leaders based on 150 presidents' responses to questions at press conferences. The joint use of the two methods proved itself to be useful in understanding the influence of historical conditions and individual characteristics in defining what national threats are.
