Fibroma ossificante juvenil: relato de caso clínico

Juvenile ossifying fibroma (JOF) is an uncommon benign fibro-osseous lesion that mainly affects young adults and adolescents. Besides to the patient's age, JOF distinguishes itself from other fibro-osseous lesions by some factors such as clinical behavior and the most common sites of occurrence. Two variants are described in the literature: trabecular and psammomatoid. They can be distinguished by their clinical and histological characteristics. The 2005 document regarding head and neck tumors published by the World Health Organization describes JOF as a lesion seen in people under 15 years old in most cases located in the maxilla when it affects gnatics bones, being uncommon its presentation in the mandible. In the present report, a female patient, 12 years old, afro-caucasian, attended the School of Dentistry of the Federal University of Uberlândia complaining about an asymptomatic swelling of the left side of mandible with three months of evolution. After clinical radiographic and histopathological examinations, the diagnosis was juvenile ossifying fibroma. The patient underwent surgery to remove the lesion with subsequent placement of a mandibular reconstruction plate. The patient didn’t have postoperative complications and the eight year follow-up shows no signs of recurrence and satisfactory healing and aesthetics.
