Avaliação da condição periodontal em grávidas de alto risco do Hospital de Clínicas da Universidade federal de Uberlândia

Periodontal disease is a chronic inflammatory disease that can lead to tooth loss, and during pregnancy, factors such as elevated progesterone and estrogen contribute to the development and exacerbation of periodontal disease. In this context, there may be an increased risk of adverse pregnancy outcomes, such as preterm delivery, preeclampsia, and low birth weight. Medical and dental follow-up of high-risk pregnant women is very important. This study evaluated periodontal health in a group of 45 pregnant women attending the Clínica de Gestantes de Hospital das Clínicas de Uberlândia - HC-UFU, of which 30 were considered to be at high risk for the systemic condition (cardiac, hypertensive, diabetic, others). Periodontal clinical examination was performed, including: Plaque Index (PI); Gingival Index (GI); Bleeding to Pollutants Index (ISS); Depth to Survey (PS); Clinical Insertion Level (NCI); Suppuration (SUP). In addition, we performed oral hygiene instruction procedures and prophylaxis on all exams, and supra and subgengival scrapings when necessary. After the examinations, we observed that the majority of pregnant women (82.22%) had some type of periodontal disease (gingivitis / periodontitis), and that there is a sixfold higher chance of high risk pregnancies (with systemic alterations) presenting periodontitis when compared to low-risk pregnant women (without systemic alteration).
